Are You Keeping Your Beauty Products Too Long?

Get waxed. Chances are you’ve let the hair down there (and everywhere else) get a little wild during the winter months. No judgment– I definitely don’t wax my legs until that first or second week of spring. Head to your local wax salon and treat your legs and lady bits to a full-on wax session. If your guy is hairy, consider suggesting that he gets a ‘brozilian,’ the masculine version of every girl’s favorite South American wax.

Get a facial. Rejuvenate old skin and boost cell turn over. Slough off dead skin below the belt with a ‘vajacial’ to smooth skin and treat any issues of hyperpigmentation or in grown hairs that occur as a result of shaving.

Get some color. Even melanin-rich girls need a little color. After three or four months of brutal New York winter weather, my milk chocolaty skin always looks a little pale and lack luster. Salon Stroke

A California woman suffered a stroke after a beauty salon visit, sparking fears over a rare but documented condition called “Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome.”

CLAIM: Getting your hair washed at a beauty salon can, in rare cases, increase the chances of a stroke.

We are seeing this all over our professional forums and its got some people pretty freaked out. I have been in the hair business for 27 years and I have never heard of a “beauty parlor stroke”… could you guys check this out and give us some real info?

ORIGIN:In January 2014, a woman in San Diego, California, went to a local salon to get her hair done. What happened next sounds like the most nightmarish of urban legends: the angle and degree she was tilted in the chair and the way her head tipped back over the sink while the stylist was washing her hair caused Elizabeth Smith to have a stroke two weeks later:

“I vomited, my head became hot and I couldn’t stand. I had weakness in my arms and legs. They didn’t think I was going to live,” said Smith, choking back tears.

Smith says she could hardly believe what nearly killed her.

Her doctors pointed to her time in the shampoo chair. Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome is what they called it. It’s a rare but documented condition.

Multiple doctors who saw Smith say when her neck was bent backwards, it hyperextended, her vertebrae slicing an artery. A clot began forming, later causing a stroke.

“Several of Ms. Smith’s neurologists confirmed with her that the stroke was caused by the vertebra dissecting her artery during her hair wash,” said Smith’s attorney Carree Nahama.

The danger is real, although the probability of it happening is low. A study that came out in 1993, subsequently covered by the New York Times, found that older people have a higher risk of a stroke during or after a visit to the beauty salon (Smith was in her late 40s at the time):

The patients suffered from a variety of complaints attributable to poor blood flow in arteries leading through the neck to the back of the brain, including severe dizziness, imbalance and facial numbness. Four out of five suffered strokes leading to permanent neurologic damage.

“In older people, neck motion beyond a certain degree can be extremely dangerous, particularly hyperextension and rotation,” said Dr. Weintraub, chief of neurology at Phelps Memorial Hospital in North Tarrytown, N.Y., referring to backward arching and twisting.

He and others have suggested that patients receiving anesthesia or undergoing prolonged dental work may also be vulnerable, since they too have their necks arched back abnormally for prolonged periods.

A 2006 study also looked into the issue, saying while it probably occurred more than previously thought, the risk of stroke in these cases was easily alleviated:

Taken together, hyperextension combined with hanging the head backwards in a hair washbasin can be seen as a risk factor for posterior circulation ischemia. It probably occurs more often than assumed and a number of patients may report about previous dizziness episodes under the same conditions when asked specifically. It can be prevented by changing the shampoo routine from the hanging head position to a flexed or neutral position.

Elizabeth Smith says she racked up $250,000 in medical bills, and is now suing the salon for damages.

(CNN) — The Mediterranean diet is well-known for its health benefits on your heart and waistline, but now your bones could benefit too, according to a new study published online by JAMA Internal Medicine.

In this study, researchers examined whether diet quality affects bone health in postmenopausal women. They found that women who ate a Mediterranean diet were less likely to suffer from hip fractures.

The Mediterranean diet is relatively easy to follow. It involves eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and peas, unrefined grains, olive oil and fish. You should limit the amount of meat, dairy, and saturated fat you eat, but on the bright side you can have a glass of red wine at dinner.

Researchers analyzed data from 40 clinical centers throughout the United States included in the Women’s Health Initiative study. The analysis included 90,014 women with an average age of 64. Participants described their diets in a WHI food frequency questionnaire at the start of the study. Researchers then compared their dietary patterns to four common healthy diets, including the Mediterranean diet, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and two others.

Nearly 16 years later, there were 2,121 cases of hip fractures and 28,718 cases of total fractures. Women who adhered the most to a Mediterranean diet were 0.29% less likely to suffer from a hip fracture than women who didn’t stick to the diet. The other three diets showed negligible success.

“Our results provide assurance that widely recommended eating patterns do not increase the risk of fractures,” said lead study author Dr. Bernhard Haring of the University of Wurzburg in Germany. “This being said, the average woman should follow a healthy lifestyle which includes adopting a healthy dietary pattern and being physically active.”

Osteoporosis-related fractures are a major burden for health care systems in aging societies, with women particularly affected, said Dr. Haring. Current research results have been inconclusive about whether intake of nutrients involved in bone metabolism can prevent fractures.

However, the results of this study suggest that a healthy diet, specifically a Mediterranean diet, might play a role in maintaining bone health in postmenopausal women.

This latest Mediterranean diet research builds on previous evidence that your health might benefit if you follow this diet. It’s been shown that the Mediterranean diet can keep your brain young, help you live longer, manage your weight better, and lower your risk for cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

“At the present time, the U.S. health system almost entirely ignores nutrition in favor of pharmacology and is hugely expensive and ineffective compared with the systems in other countries,” wrote Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard School of Public Health, in a related commentary. “Integration of the Mediterranean diet and related dietary patterns into medical practice, hospitals, schools and other institutions has the potential to improve well-being.”

Probiotic cold brew isn’t the only route to staying sane, healthy, and productive when things get crazy at the office. Perhaps no one knows this better than Sophie Keller, cofounder and “chief happiness officer”—for real—of Los Angeles’s Village Workspaces. What if your workplace doesn’t have free massages and an open bar? According to Keller, there are loads of little rituals we can adopt on an individual level to boost job satisfaction. “It’s easy to let the day control you, instead of you controlling the day,” she says, adding that having a happiness practice is a major source of empowerment and, in turn, on-the-clock contentment. Here, Keller fills us in on four of her favorite rites that make the 9-to-5 a little more blissful. What you put in your coffee cup, however, is still totally your call.

Make your to-do list more mindful.
If your out-of-control workload sends you into panic mode, Keller suggests approaching it with intention. “When you get to work, take two minutes to get in the zone and manifest calmness,” she says. “Then write a list of goals you want to accomplish that day.”

Now, here’s the kicker: After numbering your goals in order of importance, Keller suggests putting a star next to all the tasks you can accomplish in two minutes or less and tackling those first. “You can get five tasks done in ten minutes,” she says. “I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to get on a roll quickly!”

Get moving.
By now, you probably know why it pays to have a standing desk: Keller says it helps you burn calories, rev circulation, and boost productivity, all of which ultimately leads you to feel happier. “I do at least two to three hours standing each day, and to help me stay focused, I pick projects that I know will take that much time to complete,” she says.

If that’s not an option, Keller suggests breaking up your day with a walk or a short bout of exercise for a natural energy boost—and some mood-enhancing sunshine.

After my first glimpse into the geisha’s beauty rituals, I realized that Japanese skincare is designed to work with the skin instead of against it.   • Brew and enjoy a cup of green tea. The meditative practice of preparing and sipping green tea relaxes the mind and reduces stress. Green tea’s anti-inflammatory effects and high levels of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) make it a powerful, anti-aging ingredient.
  • Eat with a variety and savor every bite. Unlike many Western meals with an entrée starring at the center of the plate, most traditional Japanese meals offer a variety of different small dishes, served together. This principle is called ichi ju san sai (one soup and three side dishes, plus rice) and is essential to the Japanese diet. Beautifully arranged, these meals delight all of the senses and feed the soul.
  • If you like seafood, try eating more fish. Fish is a staple source of protein in Japan, and is rich in fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory benefits for the whole body. Walnuts and almonds are an excellent vegetarian option to benefit from the same fatty acids.
  • Add turmeric. In the southernmost region of Japan is Okinawa, which is also called the “Longevity Island.” Okinawans are famed not only for having the world’s longest life expectancies, but also aging healthfully. One reason for their long and healthy lives is the turmeric tea they drink. Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. You can easily make your own at home by adding a teaspoon of ground turmeric to approximately four cups of boiling water. You can also benefit from turmeric by adding it to your cooking.
  • Let your skincare ritual reflect most of these principles. Many anti-inflammatory ingredients that soothe the body internally are also efficacious on the skin. Calmness, from the inside or the outside, restores skin’s natural glow.

Where did you grow up? Have you always been interested in health and wellness?

I’m originally from New York City, where my journey in healing and support through food began at a very young age with the support of an Ayurvedic doctor, and my adventures in the kitchen began simultaneously with my dad. Once leaving home after high school I let myself become fully enamored with the beauty of simple ingredients, culinary traditions, and a holistic approach to wellness while traveling the world meeting healers, artisans, doctors and farmers along the way.

What is the inspiration behind Moon Juice?

I started Moon Juice in 2012. I was a chef and had worked with Alice Waters and Suzanne Goin and was poised to open a restaurant in LA. Through divine inspiration I took a brief pause to really open myself up to what was truly needed in the world and how to use my voice to change it. I wanted to bridge the gap between the healing world and the foodie world as I had done for myself. I opened Moon Juice in Venice, a second location in Silverlake a year later, and then began a brand partnership with the Ace Hotel and opened up in their spot in Downtown LA. Moon Juice excites and inspires people looking to get on the path and satiates those like myself that are already down the rabbit hole. We have become a beacon to a community.

You have a strong background in fine dining — what do you love most about creating a dish?

Working under Suzanne was the greatest experience I could ask for as a young chef. She tasted every salad I put out, and drilled into me the importance of acidity and salinity. I discovered how much cooking was about the unspoken, mystical finesse of timing, the flick of a wrist, and the layering of flavors. On the line at Lucques, I was taught to focus on the inherent perfection of the produce itself, and I learned to make each ingredient sing. I spoke with local farmers and observed how one could make an entire menu out of what was available at the market that day.

Moon Juice is an advocate for cleanses and offers a variety of them. What advice would you give someone who has never tried a cleanse?

Assess where you are in your lifestyle, what type of experience you want to have and what you have room and time for. Cleansing is not aone size fits all approach. Depending on your own unique situation, simply adding plant food to your diet might be cleansing enough.

I have tried a few “cleanses” that left me mentally and physically exhausted — what advice would you give someone like me?

I hear you on the mental and physical. I call fasting “feating.” If you’re going for a juice cleanse, think flooding your body with vitamins, minerals and enzymes vs. starving yourself which will shut down organ function, brain activity and metabolism. Choose 100% organic, nutrient dense juices with lots of greens and veggies to avoid sugar highs and the inevitable crash. You also want to drink enough in one day, at Moon Juice we recommend at least six 16oz bottles of juices and nut milks. If you start feeling spacey or weak, add more juice. From this place of knowing, the body is being nourished and all systems are going. Spaciness and flu-like systems are actually part of the cleanse process. I travel with rose oil that I like to wear, some Tibetan incense, my sheepskin that I do my Sādhanā on each morning. I always take my mud toothpaste, dead sea mineral soap bar, a little shilajit, quinton, Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C and a jar of Moon Dust to make a tonic on the go.

Is there anything you would want to tell your 26 year old self now?
